IBF General Assembly and Conference Cape Town, South Africa 13-16 June 2007
Cape Town, South Africa 13-16 June 2007
"Publishing and
Bookselling:
Get ready NOW for the digital revolution!"
Digitisation is bringing many changes to the book trade.
A significant number of independent booksellers are likely to go out
of business unless they change.
Competition from Internet traders like Amazon, Google and Microsoft,
is making the future of booksellers very uncertain. Chains or cultural
outlets of a new type are fierce competitors. Competition also comes
from other industries: music, DVDs and video games, for example.
Adaptation is most certainly the best route to survival but first
requires awareness and acceptance of the need for change.
The next step is to know which strategies booksellers have to
implement, and how concretely they can turn their bookshop into a
profitable outlet answering customers needs, whether they want p-books
or e-books.
