  What is IBF?

Formed in 1955, the international booksellers federation is an international, non-governmental organization of booksellers associations and booksellers from around the world. Its Purpose is to enable booksellers associations and individual booksellers to connect, meet, interact and cooperate, by exchanging information and experiences, and by developing ideas. IBF is founded upon a recognized need to support and promote the importance of the Book in society, as a means of communication in educational, scientific, cultural and social development, the acknowledgment that the Bookseller is often the vital, final link in the chain, between the author and the reader, and the need for booksellers to be effective by being professionally and commercially successful.

  How is IBF funded?

The IBF is a non-profit organization, funded entirely by the subscriptions of its Members and Associate Members. Some specific planned activities may be dependent upon obtaining external financing.

What are used, and what language facilities are provided?

In recent years, by consensus, the Congress and General Assemblies have been mainly conducted in English. Delegates not conversant in English usually provide their own interpreters.

Why should a bookseller association join IBF?

Why should a national bookseller association join IBF? The national bookseller associations that are Members of the IBF have a window overlooking the changing scene of the book in society, in many countries, and value the opportunity to be part of a global bookselling network. The IBF provides the meeting place in which they can obtain information, study practices in other countries, exchange experiences, test ideas, and discuss problems and challenges with knowledgeable association executives, from a wide variety of backgrounds and circumstances. The IBF is also an important international channel through which a national association can voice its concerns and receive external support.

Why should an bookseller join IBF?

Many individual booksellers have, over the years, been regular participants in IBF activities, making valuable international contacts, gaining insight into how bookselling operates in other social and cultural milieux, sharing problems, forming and discussing ideas, surveying the latest developments in methodology and technology, and developing their professionalism.

How does one , and how much does it cost?

Application for membership should be made to the Secretariat. Applications received are submitted to the IBF Council for approval.  Subscription fees, both for Member associations and for Associate Members (individual booksellers) are calculated on the base of transparent criteria approved by the General Assembly.
There is a special subsidized rate for membership of bookseller associations in developing countries. To get information on subscription fees or to require more information about membership, please contact ibf.booksellers@skynet.be.

What do members get?

· IBF Secretariat's assistance and lobbying activity: IBF actively supports its members' campaigns in favour of the promotion of reading and the lowest possible tax rate on books. IBF successfully helped some of its members to lobby and influence their national governments in favour of a book-friendly policy.

· IBF members' support and advice: IBF strongly believes in the value of shared experience and expertise. IBF Members work together in a network which makes possible a constant flow of shared information, exchange of best practice and professional experience. Members can benefit from their colleagues' experience when they are faced with a situation which has already occurred in another member's country.

· 4 Newsletters a year. Newsletters are 6-10 page documents providing booksellers with information on the trade world-wide as well as with analyses of the major issues in the book world. They also provide readers with Internet links to web sites of interest. Newsletters are sent by e-mail or by post.

Regular e-mail information, as often as needed: IBF Secretariat updates its members by e-mail every time important events or developments in the Book Trade take place.

· Access to the section of the web site for members only: In this section members have access to IBF archives and databases. Databases provide members with resources (names expertise, speakers, addresses, training, etc…) in the book trade.

· Special Rates for the Annual Congress
